We all know that phrase: “New year, new me”. But how often does that actually happen? Bring on the heartbreak, the unexpected career changes, the grief, the stress and every other unforeseen circumstance that occurs to us throughout the year. Not knowing what the new year will hold for us can be incredibly scary. We can take comfort in the fact that a change in date, January 1st, signifies a new start for us, new beginnings. Considering the dramatic changes over the past couple of years means that it is even more important to reflect on the experiences over the past year. Take a look back on the year and compile our gratitude, looking forward to a better year ahead. Before we move on to mindful ways to start the new year, let’s take a moment to be loving towards ourselves and others by watching the video below.
We all know that video can melt even the most icy of hearts but it’s message is so important to remember going into the new year. Your worth isn’t defined by whether you have a New Year’s resolution or not. Instead of creating one goal that most people will break within a month try small goals over a year. RYL has compiled a few self-care ways to get you on the right track for the new year.
MINDFUL WAYS TO START YOUR NEW YEAR
TAKE MINDFUL WALKS
Taking a walk two or three times a week can really help to clear your mind from daily stresses. Whether it’s a hike or a walk around the block, the physical and mental benefits are abundant.
REJUVINATE YOUR BEDDING
Are you bedsheets looking a little tired? Faded? Dull? It’s time for a re-fresh! What better way to get that luxury feeling than with silk sheets! Whilst they not only look gorgeous, silk is anti-microbial meaning that it kills microorganisms or stops their growth. This makes it a great material for acne or blemish-prone skin as well as the smooth texture making it great for sensitive skin. If silk is a bit on the expensive side for you, satin is another good option or opt for just changing to silk pillowcases instead.
SWEAT MORE
If you’ve followed RYL for a while you will know that we love anything workout-related. A sweaty session raises your body temperature which detoxes the body and burns some major calories. You can be achieve this two ways: sauna or working out- choose whatever suits you most! Getting your sweat on once a week is a great reset for your body.
TRACK YOUR CYCLE
Each body is unique and should be treated that way. Keeping track of your cycle and general wellness is so important for mental wellbeing. Whether you want to track your period, sleep, exercise, diet, metabolism- kick off the new year focusing on yourself! Your skin also changes a lot during the different stages of your menstrual cycle. Being aware of what stage you are in will allow you to tailor your skincare routine to meet your skins needs, For example, if you notice your skin breaking out more the week before your period, focusing on hydrating rather than exfoliating your skin to help soothe any inflammation.
MAKE TIME FOR A LITTLE SELF-INDULGENCE
Whoever said you can’t self-indulge in a healthy lifestyle is completely wrong. At RYL we are all about moderation, a little self-indulgence never hurt anyone! Maybe it’s a weekend getaway with all the trimmings or a lavish shopping spree with your best pals. Plan a monthly get-together with your friends with not an ounce of guilt afterwards!
DON’T FORGET YOUR FACE
Sometimes we focus so much on working out our whole body we forget to focus on the face. Taking time to formulate your skincare routine will give your face a lift and help you target specific areas you would like to improve. If you fancy a splurge, why not treat yourself to a facial!
HYDRATE, HYDRATE, HYDRATE
Hydration is the key to youthfulness! By hydrating regularly, you are repairing your skin barrier, reducing the prevalence of fine lines and wrinkles. Invest in a water-filter to make sure your water is clean. Most filtered or tap water is stripped of minerals and electrolytes so try adding supplements to your water.
TAKE CARE OF YOUR LYMPHATIC SYSTEM
Self-massaging techniques can really help de-puff and re-energise your face and neck. Building this step into your skincare routine is a pleasurable way to make sure your fluids are movin’ and groovin’. Click here for some great facial tools!
READ BEFORE SLEEP
Instead or reaching for your phone for that dose of social media dopamine, try reaching for your favourite book. Being on your phone raises your cortisol (stress hormone) level making you anxious before sleeping. Instead, grab that book off the shelf, blow off the dust and settle down for a 30 minute immersion.
PRACTICE BEING MINDFUL
Taking 5-10 minutes every day to be present is so important for your mental health. However, being mindful can be difficult, especially as a beginner so have a look at the video below as a starter guide. See our guide for meditation if you want some unique mindfulness practices. Meditation can help repair your body’s tissues and cells with give your skin a fresh and youthful glow. Additionally, mindful breathing adds oxygen to the skin which is the key to boosting cellular health.
Remember to be easy on yourself when you start this new year. Be proud of the progress you made last year and look forward to more development this year!
