Protein has been added to smoothies for years but how much protein do you usually get in there? Most supermarket smoothies have around 0.5g of protein in a 250ml bottle. Bearing in mind the average recommended protein intake is around 45g for women and 55g for men per day, according to nutritionists. The takeaway from this? Just because something is a good brand, doesn’t mean it is good for you...surprise, surprise! So it makes sense to transition away from traditional ready made smoothies and start making our own. The tricky part is knowing where to start and how to get that protein up, that’s where RYL comes in! We have created the perfect recipe if you want a healthier smoothie (with skin benefits) that tastes like a chocolate milkshake!
INGREDIENT NOTES
Protein
This recipe uses whey protein powder, you can also use a vegan, plant based powder. However, often to get the same level of protein, plant-based powders have to use a large amount of the protein such as peas. This can cause digestive problems if consumed regularly due to the high amount of pea protein. Check out Dr. Ben Bickman’s podcast “Why We Get Sick from Insulin Resistance” to find out more. The collagen and amino acids that are found in whey protein powder also help to maintain the skin’s elasticity and firmness.
Peanut Butter
This recipe uses all natural peanut butter that is made from 100% peanuts. Lots of nut butters contain sugar and palm oil which has societal and environmental impacts as well as links to inflammation and spikes in insulin. It has been suggested that peanut butter can also help protect your skin from free radicals that come from UV rays. Free radicals cause oxidative stress which can lead to premature ageing.
For this recipe, you’ll need a blender. When starting this healthy living journey, it was so difficult to find an affordable, reliable blender that would break down after a few uses! This blender is super compact, comes with 2 bottles and I found it super reliable…definitely and RYL recommendation!
